Apple is working on the release of a new mouse to replace or augment the current Mighty Mouse. Here is a short preview of its likely features.
Items listed here are subject to change and are sourced from circumstantial information released by non-Apple third parties and based upon Apple’s existing products that are publicly available. Please note that this is not official information provided by Apple and is not intended to be definitive or relied upon for any purpose. Readers are advised to consider these features as possibilities until Apple decides to officially release details of the new device.
General Shape
The new Apple mouse is likely to be slightly sleeker than the current Mighty Mouse.
Color
The new Apple mouse is likely to be housed within a shell that is not the same white as the current Mighty Mouse and which may be aluminum in keeping with current generation Mac products.
Touch
The new Apple Mouse will likely incorporate a touch pad sensor across the top to allow for gestures and multiple finger manipulations similar to the current generation trackpads on MacBook Pro models.
Click
The new Apple Mouse’s touch pad will likely click and be used as a right and left button depending on location of the user’s touch. The touch pad may not move, but instead register a “click” gesture and the Mouse may emit a click-like sound similar to the function of the current Mighty Mouse side buttons which cause an internal speaker in the Mighty Mouse to emit a click sound.
Gyroscope / Accelerometer
The new Apple Mouse will likely incorporate a gyroscope and/or Accelerometer to allow it to operate in mid-air without being flat on a surface. It will likely operate the same way while on a surface, meaning that it will likely not incorporate a laser or LED tracking component like most current mice on the market. Note that this feature may not see release initially and may be held to be released with a future version of the Apple mouse. Apple may decide to withhold this feature from the wired version of the new mouse, so that only the wireless version may have the ability to operate off of a surface in mid-air.
